Shield Yourself.

Hey Guys, responding to a request made by Red-Imp, GadgetCore has saved you the time consuming search and filtered out between help and hype to find you the best anti-virus program.

The winner without a doubt is:

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0

The Award winning protection to meet your basic security needs

  • Surf, and search with confidence, while LinkScanner® keeps you safe from harmful sites
  • Get online and offline protection from viruses, spyware, and other nasties
  • Enjoy consistently high-speed PC performance with our new enhanced virus scanner
  • Automatic updates keep your protection current
  • Compatible with Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2000

Overall it’s stupidly easy to use, provides rock solid protection and of course is FREE.

Also a plus point which might sound odd, is that it’s not overly cautious and wont block for example ‘safe’ games your installing.

However if you want more sophisticated options such as:

  • Advanced Anti-Rootkit protection
Ensures even the most sophisticated hidden threats are kept out
  • Game Mode
Keeps you safe without interrupting you while you’re playing
  • Phishing protection
Checks to make sure web pages really are what they appear to be
  • Enhanced Firewall
Prevents hackers from seeing inside your computer
  • Anti-Spam
Blocks spammers and scammers from clogging your system
  • Expert Technical support
Free technical assistance whenever you need it

Then you invest £20 to £30 in an advanced version (There are free trials avaliable):

  • AVG Anti-Virus 9.0
  • AVG Internet Security 9.0

But in this reviewer’s opinion, the free one is more than you need.

For advanced users

But if you find AVG too full and resource hogging, Avast Antivirus is a lighter alternative and in a majority of benchmarks of this Antivirus. This is for more advanced users with more advanced options and a less helpful UI. Although this has been recently updated, AVG’s UI is still much better. Co-founder and reviewer George uses Avast however AVG is still a great option being stupidly easy to use.

Did you tell your Dad he was a fool? :) Just kidding. But yeah, some people get the impression that Norton is some how amazing, but it just is not :)

I hope you find the right Anti-virus program for you... Good luck :P

When my dad was buying a laptop, I told him not to get two things, Windows Vista (far to complicated, get Xp or wait a month for windows 7, at the time) and to never get Norton.

He came back with a Dell with Vista protected by Norton... lol

I too would never buy Norton... A relative of mine had it, and it caused them so many problems.

I've always found Kaspersky to be an excellent security program.. my only fault would be it's far to "over cautious" in the fact it likes to block new programs I install (such as recently, Unreal Tournament 2003 which it blocked from working) so I have/had to go through a routine and show it's safe.

But I've looked at AVG, Comodo, Mcafee, Norton and ESET Smart and always highly rated Comodo and AVG.

(Will never buy Norton lol)

Personally, I'm very fond of the avast! AntiVirus, because AVG is known to cause problems with games - which I do a lot of... however, AVG is pretty awesome. (aside from the few issues).

Research would show that the Virus Free-Guaranteed, Award Winning Comodo Firewall and Antivirus is best especially with the Live Expert help (Pro) and the fact that it's FREE.

Yes AVG has always been a very good anti-virus and PC protection software. (Always looked at it but I am still using Kaspersky 2010).

I was more looking towards virus's that security centres aren't picking up.

Such as "Security Master AV" the rougeware that downloads and installs itself via a trojan and then blocks the Windows task manager and spyware software and so can't be detected (it also makes itself almost impossible to remove) and therefore needed malwarebytes software to actually remove it (malware bytes is actually a great bit of software).

But yes, AVG is great.. but security centres don't pick up all virus's.. so I've looked into other bits of software to fully ensure my PC is safe (like the Comodo firewall).
