New SkyDrive Features Announced

Microsoft’s SkyDrive, software that allows for storage and sharing of files, has proven itself a contender in the cloud storage space, thanks in part to products within the Microsoft ecosystem like Office and its cloud counterpart Office 365. Early this morning, Microsoft unveiled SkyDrive’s new native application with Metro interface for Windows 8. Also announced was integration with Explorer in Windows, a mounted drive interface, and Fetching, which provides access to any file on a computer associated with a SkyDrive account. Fetching, essentially allows for remote browsing of files on a connected computer and remote uploading of those files to the SkyDrive for access anywhere. As a mounted drive, the SkyDrive will function as a local disk to which other applications can save pictures and documents up to 2 GB in size, a step up from the 300 MB limitation of the current web interface. Microsoft expects that both web interface and native app will soon converge in functionality as the line between native and web applications continues to blur. The Metro SkyDrive app will be available as part of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, expected February 29th at MWC.
