Megaupload.com gets shut down by US Dept. of Justice.
The Department of Justice over in the United States has finally pulled the plug on megaupload.com
The announcement came just yesterday as seven people have been arrested and on charge for “engaging in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement”.
The two corporations responsible for the megaupload and megavideo websites are Megaupload Limited and Vestor Limited.
The people involved are few but far between, ranging from different countries including Estonia, New Zealand and Germany and if each received the maximum penalty on all the counts they face, they would see themselves in prison for up to 50 years.
This comes just days after big name websites like Wikipedia, Google and Reddit ‘went dark‘ to protest the two anti-piracy laws still being discussed in the US, the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect Intellectual Property Act.
What do you guys think? Is this the right decision that the DOJ has made? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.
