Young Innovators: Torch Powered By Natural Body Heat
Google Science Fair is renowned for giving young scientists, inventors and innovators a chance to prove themselves – a chance to build a gadget or design and implement a scientific experiment that will somehow affect the way we think about certain aspects of our daily lives. One young innovator, Ann Makosinski, has done just that. She’s only 15 years old and yet she has been able to design and build a very specific torch – but it’s no ordinary torch. This torch can be powered by the mere body heat from your hands, without the use of any batteries.
Although the idea may seem rather trivial at first glance, the implications for future energy efficient electronic gadgets are certainly all over this project. Ann will be competing with 14 other finalists to win the Google Global Science Fairs grand prize that includes: a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Expeditions, a $50,000 scholarship, and other numerous prizes.
These 15 finalist were chosen from thousands of different submissions, from students across all parts of the globe (over 120 countries!)
Ann Makosinski said the idea came to her when considering the yet untapped thermal energy from the human body. It most certainly is a rather unique and interesting idea, but the winners of the Google Science Fair will not be announced until September 23rd.
