Is the Kindle Fire a secret success?

Analyst Jordan Rohan of the firm Stifel Nicolas revised his estimates of Kindle Fire sales from 5 to 6 million units for the fourth quarter of 2011, that’s a massive number considering Apple sold some 15 million iPads in the same quarter. Amazon released the Kindle in November of last year to compete in the tablet space on cost at the bargain bin $199 price point; Amazon continues to not release detailed sales numbers to the public, stating only that they sell one million Kindle units (that number includes all models from the base keyboard and touch to the Fire tablet). While 6 million is not out of the realm of possibility, industry consensus is that there aren’t many Fire tablets out and about, however, success for Amazon is predicated on content sales facilitated by the Kindle “portal” rather than hardware sales.
