Apple: nearing 25 BILLION downloaded apps!

Apple has recently announced that it is nearing 25 BILLION app downloads in the time the App store on the iPhone and iPad has been running.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, Apple is turning to its usual trick of promising a HUGE prize giveaway of whoever is the lucky one to download the 25th billion app from the App store.

In a press release, Apple stated:

The countdown has started. And there’s going to be a winner. As the 25 billionth download approaches, we want to say thank you. Download any of the more than 500,000 apps on the App Store for iPhone, iPod touch or iPad – if you download the 25 billionth app, you could win a $10,000 App Store Gift Card.

Since the App stores inception in July 2008, the growth of users downloading apps has been astonishingly high.

In just 2 and a half years Apple hit the 10 billion downloads mark and then another 6 months to hit 15 billion apps.

At the time of writing the tally is currently around 24.3 billion suggesting that there is still some time to download another Angry Birds, Tiny Wings or Fruit Ninja app, but at the rate its going that shouldn’t take too long.
